Information for firearms purchase
Long Guns Purchaser must be 18 years of age, a California resident with a valid California Identification Card (CID) or Drivers License (CDL)*. The purchaser must pass a CA DOJ background check. Handguns Purchaser must be 21 years of age, a California resident with a valid Calfornia Identification Card (CID) or Drivers License (CDL)*. Purchaser must pass a CA DOJ background check. Purchaser must have a valid Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) as well as successfully perform a Safe Handling demostration with the purchased firearm. The purchaser is also require to present a proof of California residency such as a utility bill, residential lease, or property deed. Some Individuals are exempt from the HSC, which is listed in paragraph 12807 of article 8: Handgun Safety Certificate. *Military Identification Cards can be accepted in place of CID or CDL if accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in california.
Note: If the purchaser is not a U.S. Citizen, then he or she is required to demonstrate that he or she is legally within the United States by providing to the firearms dealer with documentation that contains his/her Alien Registration Number or I-94 Number.
